Gwynne and team have done an amazing job planting trees, bay laurel and cherry laurel hedging in our garden near Colchester. 1st class company and I'll be going back for more hedges in the autumn. Thanks Gwynne, the hedges look great.

Easy to use website with plenty of choices at good prices. I ordered several bare root plants and all were delivered as expected and in a very healthy condition. Only time will tell if they are successful once planted but, I see no reason why they should fail.
Based on my experience I would definitely recommend Hedging Plants Direct and expect to use them again soon.

Hedging Q&A

Hedging Plants: Your Questions Answered

Quick answers from our nursery team to the questions we are asked most.

All hedging questions & answers

What is the best plant for a hedge?

It depends on what you want the hedge to do. For year-round privacy, Cherry Laurel and Portuguese Laurel are the most popular evergreen choices. English Yew makes the smartest formal hedge, while Beech, Hornbeam and native mixes suit traditional and wildlife-friendly boundaries.

What is the fastest growing hedge?

Green Leylandii is the fastest growing hedge we sell, followed by Cherry Laurel, Privet and Photinia. Cherry Laurel typically adds 30 to 60cm a year once established. See all our fast growing hedge plants.

When is the best time to plant a hedge?

Bare root hedging is planted while the plants are dormant, from late autumn to early spring. Root ball plants are planted through autumn and winter, and pot grown hedging can be planted at any time of year as long as it is kept watered. Our guide shows you how to plant a hedge step by step.

What is the lowest maintenance hedge?

Slower growing evergreens such as English Yew, Portuguese Laurel and Euonymus usually need only one trim a year to stay neat. Browse our slow growing hedge plants.

How many hedge plants do I need per metre?

As a guide, plant 3 to 5 bare root plants per metre, or 2 to 3 root ball or pot grown plants per metre, depending on the plant and how quickly you want the hedge to fill in. If you are unsure, ask our nursery team.

What is the difference between bare root, root ball and pot grown hedging?

Bare root plants are lifted from the field without soil and are the best value. Root ball plants are lifted with their soil wrapped in hessian, giving larger plants. Pot grown plants are grown in containers and can be planted all year. Read hedging root types explained.

Do you deliver across the UK?

Yes. We deliver across Great Britain from our nursery in Essex, with free delivery on orders from £200. Larger orders travel on a pallet. See our delivery information.
